The Wake Forest Historic District, listed on the National Register in 2003, covers the original Wake Forest College campus and the faculty housing that grew up around it. Those are period houses with period windows: true divided lights, deep sills, plaster returns instead of wood casing in some cases. Plantation shutters suit them because the frame reads as trim rather than as an add-on, and once hung they become part of the house. The town publishes design standards for the district, and while interior treatments are not covered, we plan around them for anything that shows from the sidewalk.

Glen Royall Mill Village is its own thing again — craftsman bungalows, pyramidal cottages, and shotgun houses built for mill workers. Small rooms, and often a single window carrying an entire wall.
