Custom Blinds & Shades in Apex, NC
Apex kept its downtown, which is more than most Triangle towns can say. The old railroad-era commercial block and the houses around it are still intact, and they sit maybe two miles from subdivisions that were pasture in 2005.
Both are on our route. The measure looks nothing alike.
What we see in Apex homes
Downtown Apex and the streets radiating off Salem hold the oldest stock: turn-of-the-century and early 1900s houses with tall narrow sash, wide casing, and in a number of cases original glass worth not disturbing. Deep casing on those homes is an advantage. You have enough reveal for a clean inside mount, and the trim frames the treatment properly instead of the treatment sitting on top of the trim. Shutters look right in those rooms because the frame reads as millwork.
Scotts Mill covers a big share of the 27502 volume — homes built roughly 1998 through 2005, running 1,400 to 4,100 square feet, with a strong front-porch and Victorian-influenced design vocabulary. That era put a lot of windows on the front elevation and a lot of them under porch roofs. Same situation as a Knightdale porch home: shade is not the issue, sightline is. The Victorian detailing on some of those houses also supports a softer treatment than you would put in a plain colonial. A Roman shade with a gentle fold sits comfortably with that trim where a flat roller can read austere.
Bella Casa in west Apex is later, mostly 2006 through 2016, on larger lots with stone and brick exteriors and covered porches. Sweetwater off 64 near 540 is newer still, mixing single-family with Charleston-, Savannah-, and Beaufort-inspired townhomes on small lots. The townhome sections are where side windows sit close to the neighbor unit and privacy drives everything. On the larger Bella Casa homes the concern flips to the covered outdoor spaces. Those deep porches and screened areas are genuinely usable most of the year here, and exterior solar shades on the open side turn a porch that is unbearable at five o clock into one you can actually sit on.

Before you order in Apex
Porches are worth treating
A lot of Apex homes have deep covered porches or screened rooms that go unused in late afternoon because of low western sun. Exterior solar shades on the open side extend the usable hours without walling the space in.
Deep casing downtown
Older Apex homes generally have enough reveal for a proper inside mount, which is not true everywhere. Where the depth is there, use it. The treatment sits inside the trim and the room looks finished rather than layered.

Common questions from Apex homeowners
Do exterior solar shades hold up outdoors year round?
The fabrics we use are made for exterior exposure and handle Carolina summers and winters without breaking down. We do recommend retracting them ahead of a named storm, the same as you would an awning.
We have a screened porch. Can shades go on that?
Yes, and it is one of the more satisfying jobs we do. We mount to the porch framing on the exposed side, usually with a track or side channel so wind does not lift the fabric. Motorized is worth it on wide spans.
